Asphalt Shingles Done Right for the North

Asphalt shingles are still the most common roof in Thunder Bay, and for good reason: they are cost-effective, come in a wide range of looks, and, installed properly, they hold up. The catch is that last part. In a climate with heavy snow load, hard freeze-thaw, and cold lake wind, a shingle roof lives or dies on how it is installed, not just the shingles themselves. A cheap install over a bad deck with poor ventilation will fail fast up here. A proper one will give you decades.

Choosing Your Shingles

Architectural Shingles

Our usual recommendation for Thunder Bay homes. Thicker and layered, with a dimensional look and higher wind ratings, architectural shingles handle our wind and weather better than 3-tab and last noticeably longer. The modest extra cost over basic shingles buys real durability, which is worth it in this climate.

3-Tab Shingles

Flat, uniform, and the most budget-friendly option. They have a shorter lifespan and lower wind rating, so they suit tighter budgets and shorter-term ownership rather than a forever home.

When to Step Up to Metal

If you want the longest-lasting roof and the best snow shedding, metal is the step beyond shingles. It costs more up front but lasts decades longer and handles our climate better. Our guide on metal versus asphalt for Thunder Bay winters compares them directly.

What Makes a Shingle Roof Last Up Here

The shingles are only part of the system. On every shingle roof we install:

  • Ice-and-water membrane along the eaves and in the valleys, sealing around fasteners to block ice-dam water from reaching the deck. This is essential in our climate.
  • Full synthetic underlayment over the rest of the deck for a secondary moisture barrier.
  • Proper attic ventilation, balanced intake and exhaust, so the deck stays cold and the snowpack does not melt from below and feed ice dams. This is the single biggest factor in how long a Thunder Bay roof lasts.
  • Wind-rated installation with correct nailing patterns, enhanced on exposed and lakeside lots where the wind is worst.
  • Proper flashing at every chimney, vent, valley, and transition, detailed to survive freeze-thaw.

A roof done this way is a different product than the same shingles slapped down without the membrane and ventilation, and in Thunder Bay the difference shows up the first hard winter.

Tear-Off, Not Layover

On most local roofs we tear off the old shingles rather than laying over them. Layovers hide decking rot and ventilation problems, add weight to a structure already loaded with snow, and shorten the new roof’s life. Tearing off lets us inspect the deck, replace any rotted sheathing, and correct ventilation, the steps that actually make a Northern roof durable. This is part of our full roof replacement process.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do asphalt shingles last in Thunder Bay?

Expect the lower end of the rated range, because our climate is hard on shingles. Basic 3-tab shingles often last around 15 to 20 years here, and quality architectural shingles roughly 20 to 30 with good ventilation and maintenance. Heavy snow load, freeze-thaw, and lake wind all shorten shingle life compared with milder regions, which is why installation quality matters so much. For maximum lifespan, metal is the alternative to consider.

Are shingles a good choice in our climate or should I go metal?

Shingles are a sound, cost-effective choice for many Thunder Bay homes, especially on a mid-range budget, as long as they are installed properly with ice-and-water membrane and good ventilation. Metal lasts longer and sheds snow better, so for homeowners planning to stay long-term it is often the better value. We will give you an honest comparison so you can choose based on budget and how long you will be in the home.

What is the difference between 3-tab and architectural shingles?

3-tab shingles are flat, uniform, and the most budget-friendly, with a shorter lifespan. Architectural (also called dimensional or laminated) shingles are thicker, layered for a richer look, carry higher wind ratings, and last noticeably longer. In Thunder Bay's wind and weather we usually recommend architectural shingles, since the modest extra cost buys meaningful extra durability.

Why is ice-and-water membrane so important under shingles here?

Because of ice dams. When meltwater backs up at a cold eave and refreezes, it can force water under the shingles. A self-adhering ice-and-water membrane along the eaves and valleys seals around the fasteners and blocks that water from reaching the deck. In our freeze-thaw climate it is essential underlayment on any shingle roof, not an optional extra.

Can you just lay new shingles over my old ones?

We do not recommend it, and on most Thunder Bay roofs we tear off instead. Laying over hides decking rot and ventilation problems, adds weight to a structure already carrying heavy snow load, and shortens the life of the new shingles. A proper tear-off lets us inspect and fix the deck and ventilation, which is where the durability of a Northern roof really comes from.
